Chapter 2

  • Put a line between Assignment #1 and Assignment #2.
  • Read chapter two.
  • On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing

Foreshadowing

1. Afterwards, more than one of those present remembered that moment.
2. Good thing, perhaps, that one can't foresee the future.
3. He was anxious to find out a little about these people who owned Indian Island, but the man Naracott seemed curiously ill informed, or perhaps unwilling to talk.
4. She was faintly disturbed. Everything--somehow--seemed a little queer.

The first point shows foreshadowing because something must have happened to him for them to have remembered it. Otherwise why would it have even said anything about remembering it. The second point shows foreshadowing because somebody is glad that they can't see the future because otherwise they would find out a secret. The third point shows foreshadowing because it tells that Naracott probably had something to hide and that during the course of the book we would most likely find out. The fourth point shows foreshadowing because one of the characters thinks that her situation was odd. She was disturbed. Why would the book tell us she felt disturbed if nothing odd was going to happen to her or any of the other guests.

Chapter 1

    • how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

    • how might the title be a clue to the story?

A mystery novel differs from a narrative because a mystery switches off narrators, but a narrative is written from one character's point of view. I think that the title may be a clue to the story because it is "And Then There Were None". So in the end everyone must have been killed. I also think that when the guests come to the island none of the hosts and hostesses will be there and it will be a setup for a murder.
